說in the 中文

Sound Grooves

I had my first-ever ultrasound today. No, I'm not pregnant -- that is, unless the fetus is attempting to exit the womb via my groin. But I have had this pulling sensation in that general area, so I went to the doctor to get it checked out. He recommended that I have an ultrasound -- no radiation, he assured me -- to see if there was any torn tissue or massive chunks of intestine dangling down into my scrotum. OK, he left out that last part, but my paranoia did not.

Needless to say, having an ultrasound done on your nether regions is an awkward experience. Especially when the technician is both female and younger than you are. I was shown into a decidedly spa-like room, complete with dimmed lighting and white sheets, and given detialed instructions about how to undress myself and how to position myself on the bed. Multiple towels and blankets were involved: a blanket to put in between my legs, one to cover my privates, and then a larger blanket to cover my legs. The tech left me alone to prepare all of this and quite a long time went by before she came back. I struggled to stay awake in the strangely comforting room, cradled by the droning of several machines in the background.

The actual ultrasound ended up taking longer than I thought, probably around twenty minutes total. The tech applied a generous dollop of goop ("water-based gel") to the injured area -- a surprisingly warm and pleasant experience. Then she pulled out the wand ("linear array transducer") and probed around like some sort of cautious elephant. I was positioned so that I could see the computer screen, a truly bizarre sight. I kept expecting to see some pointed, fetal head materialize in the shifting gray textures, but all I saw were maps that I couldn't read.

The tech finished and left to show the doctors the pictures. She was gone for a while and once again I had to resist the urge to fall asleep. When she came back she was all peppy, telling me that I didn't have a hernia and everything was fine. Probably just a pulled muscle. Now get up, wipe all that goop off your junk, and get the funk out of here.

Muzzle

Speaking of mom:

Who needs cell phones?

The hand that takes

'Cause when love is gone there's always justice
And when justice is gone, there's always force
And when force is gone, there's always mom: hi mom!
So hold me, mom, in your long arms
So hold me, mom, in your long arms
In your automatic arms
Your electronic arms
In your arms
So hold me, mom, in your long arms
Your petrochemical arms
Your military arms
In your electronic arms
